CREATIVE ARTS MINISTRIES

The creative arts ministries of Hope work throughout the year to provide ministry for weekend services, seasonal, and special events. The volunteer teams involve many people both on stage and behind the scenes. Click below to find out about volunteer opportunities within the various arts ministry areas.

Adult Drama Team

Who participates on the drama team?

The adult volunteers involved in drama ministry use their talents primarily in our weekend services. They may also present during special events and/or in full-length productions. They have submitted to the audition process and use their talents and skills to serve our congregation and community through the art of acting.

How does one become a member of the drama team?

Auditions are held twice a year, usually spring and fall, and are announced in the bulletin and eNEWS (as well as this page) when they are upcoming.

Who can audition?

Adults (ages 17+). Although it is not necessary to have previous drama training or experience in order to audition, we are seeking team members who possess strong communication and acting talents.

What is the audition process?

Our audition process begins with an open audition for which participants do not need to prepare. This audition is low-key and non-threatening and, in fact, we often hear of the enjoyable time had by those participating! Participants take part in non-threatening group drama games and scenarios that serve to assess basic acting, creative and communication talents, as well as reading through short scripts (both dramatic and comedic) for final ministry team consideration.

What requirements must be met as part of the audition process?

Completion of, or commitment to complete by the next class date, the Discovering Church Membership class.

What are the ministry commitments?

When cast in specific sketches, they commit to rehearsals, memory work and presenting in all three services of our weekend services. In addition, they participate in once-a-month drama team meetings for the purpose of training, fellowship and team building. From time to time, they may be asked to assist with sketches in the weekend children's services, and may also be asked to participate with the production drama company (see below) in large-scale theatrical presentations.

What about auditions for children and teens?

Children and/or teens participant in weekend sketches and/or full-length productions as needed periodically. Separate auditions are held annually and children and/or teen actors are utilized from this roster of students.

Dance

Dance is a celebrated part of the Creative Arts Ministry and is included as specific opportunities present themselves (i.e., special presentation needs, theatrical productions, etc.). According to the need, any one of several styles may be utilized (ballet, contemporary, musical theater, jazz, hip hop, etc.) and thus, dancers of varying styles are an important part of the creative arts team. In addition, choreographers with strong talent and experience are a welcome addition to the ministry. The invitation to participate in dance at Hope is based on a preliminary dance audition, the dancer's level of experience and skill, and completion of, or the commitment to complete, the Discovering Church Membership Class. If interested in participating in dance at Hope, please contact Debbie Dodson, Creative Arts Director, at debbied@gethope.net or 523.0620 x109.

Production Teams (Behind-the-Scenes)

These teams are made up of volunteers participating on creative, technical, and administrative teams. They are especially needed during large productions and are responsible for various "behind-the-scenes" tasks such as:

      • Sets (designing, building, painting, decorating)
      • Props (gathering, organizing, crafting)
      • Costumes (designing, gathering, sewing, fitting, organizing, etc.)
      • Hair & Make-up (designing and attending to)
      • Stagehands (during performances & special events)
      • Hospitality (assisting in the feeding cast & crew)
      • Administrative (general assistance, errands, etc.)
